objects of sentiment
2008
statement
This body of work deals with information, intimate and sentimental, that is passed on from one generation to the next. I employ certain objects that have the ability to reference the past. Doilies and other domestic fabrics suggest the relationship between memory and experience. Domestic objects, like household fabrics, are a reminder of home and the rhythm of daily life. Home, for me, is as sacred as a space can be: a place filled with familiar objects that create security and comfort, where children are raised, moments celebrated, and values transmitted from generation to the next. Both the home and the objects in it retain enormous memorial weight. I am interested in how one’s self is shaped in relationship to these objects and everyday activities through exploring their inherent meaning. Using the jewelry format to express these ideas allow me to look past a jewel’s desire for immediate attention, and explore its sentimental value.
